A Low Noise Cmos Preamplifier for Analog Electro-optical Fibre Links

Several pin-diode preamplifiers have been implemented in bipolar and CMOS processes for electrooptic digital signal transmission. We present a new pin-diode receiver preamplifier optimised for analog signal transmission. The design is based on the active feedback transimpedance circuit which does not require on-chip passive components. The preamplifier has been designed and fabricated in a 0.7μm CMOS technology, and hybridised in a compact package together with the pin-diode and fiber pigtail. Experimental measurements in accordance with simulation indicate a step response rise time of 5ns for a transresistance of 20kΩ and a power consumption of 4mW. Input noise current spectral density is limited to about 1pA/√Hz at 1pF input capacitance. Gain variability is provided, thus allowing applications such as signal processing, gain tracking and equalization.
